Why use a Tennis Ball Machine like Boomer?

There are many reasons to use a tennis ball machine. But to use a machine that shoots a ball back when it sees your shot in is like playing a point. You will learn one of the few concepts, a machine like boomer, can teach. Timing! According to Robert Gibson Timing is the third to success at anything you do. Timing is Power on the court and off. With a pro working with you, you can learn true power and control.

Most players use a wall to get their 1 million strokes in a year. It is good for; timing of the grip, learning a point of contact for a ball straight forward stroke, reaction time, how to get beat by a player at the net, and if you are aggressive you can get a cardio workout by hitting angles. So why do you want to use a ball machine like Boomer?

Here are just a few suggestions:

  1. Consistency (the machine can play better than a back board shooting balls: left, right, deep, short, high, low, heavy topspin, to wicked backspin, hard, soft, fast, slow)
  2. Direction (this machine can use direction in multiple ways: places the ball based on where you hit the ball according to programing [thinking, the machine selects a shot based on the shot mix already setup and the Depth, Width and Speed of your shot ], user defined (like most machines hit left hit right [but Boomer allows you to hit 11 directions for 30 shots not just endless], Coach programed (point replication Wide, Wide, Jam)
  3. Depth (this machine can create depth, by power rating, elevation, speed, and/or spin.)
  4. Height (this machine creates the height of the balls being shot by changing elevation, and spin.)
  5. Spin (is generated by the moving of 2 wheels at different speeds and direction. No side spin or golfers slice)
  6. Power (is generated by level and combining spin and speed)
  7. Speed (is custom set or by level)
  8. Shot Selection / Sequence (You can program the same points over and over until you learn how to win or put in the winning point at this year’s US Open to learn how win against the PRO’s)
  9. Match and Tie-Breaker play (Boomer can play full Matches or Tie-Breakers calling the lines and keeping score. From beginner to undefeated 7.0 NTRP Ranking Level)
  10. Analytics (Boomer tracks all the shots he hits at you and all the shots you hit back including depth, width, speed, and Rating level)

I can’t tell you how many times I have heard that’s impossible, no one can get that, and as the player walks away thinking they have won the point, the player on the other side hits the shot back for a winner. Remember, just because you have never met anyone that can hit your shot dosen’t mean they are not alive and well somewhere else in the world. Many players won’t play against a backboard or a machine because they think they can’t win. With Boomer, if you play above the level he is set at you can win but in the same breath he has a level that has never been beaten. The question is are you going to train to beat the best, Boomer! at that level and become better than Federer, Nadal, Sampras, Djokovic, Navratilova, Graf, Evert, on the Court. I have not completely tested boomer to see exactly the most balls this machine can hit in one hour but my players and their drills for private training lessons average 600 – 800 strokes an hour ( the same as playing a 5 set match 271 points average 3 strokes per point or 813 strokes). I have seen boomer hit 1435 strokes an hour. I am sure he can hit more but most players can’t keep up with that pace. If you want to try Call Robert at (919) 522 – 9463.

Six of the Nine points up above are from Tennis Channels News clip on the Brain Game: Seven Ways to Force an Error by Craig O’Shannessy . The last 4 are contributed by Boomer, Do It Right Sports and Robert Gibson.

Tennis Lessons that use Tennis Analytics to change the sorry state of U.S. Tennis ?

There came out of the MIT Sloan Sports Analytics Conference these statements about Tennis Analytics. I would like to let you know that these gentlemen did not know about Boomer’s potiential to address these areas. So today’s tennis lessons will be about Tennis Analytics an what Do It Right Sports  has to offer users of our services.

The orginal Article

This portion modify by Robert Allen Gibson

Analytics cannot save U.S. Tennis. Most “_____ Analytics” panels began the same way, with executives, current or former players, and ESPN personalities all smiling and telling the crowd that analytics are surging in the given sport (then they spend 40-50 minutes attempting to prove it with varying degrees of success). The “Tennis Analytics” panel, on the other hand? Not so much. In ESPN the Magazine‘s Analytics Issue, major sports were ranked according to analytical advancement. Tennis was second to last, ahead of just boxing. Former pro Todd Martin, on the panel with coach Paul Annacone, “tennis analytics pioneer,” New York Times contributor Craig O’Shannessy and moderator Marc Stein, discussed how, when you watch tennis on television, you are seeing the same stats you saw 20 years ago: first and second serve percentage, winners, and unforced errors. Meanwhile, as I learned during the Australian Open, you cannot really even find consistent data online regarding winners and errors, which was mind-boggling.

O’Shannessy discussed the ways in which he is using data and analytics to help professional players — and yes, I joined his website, The Brain Game, immediately after the discussion — and mentioned that since tennis is basically “50 percent chess, 50 percent poker” the potential for tennis analytics is still quite high. They all agreed, however, that analytics cannot help the sorry state of U.S. Tennis at the moment. Martin briefly channeled Bill Murray: “If the game’s not taught well at the beginning levels, it just doesn’t matter. Americans are being taught how to hit, but not where to hit, and, as Annacone said, “You get 16-20 year olds trying to figure out how to play after eight years or so of bad habits.” Exciting, huh?

We at Do It Right Tennis are tring to change these comments with Boomer. We will put into the hands of the coaches, Pros, Players and Sponsors the information in a form that they will be able to display the depth, width and speed of each shot hit off the court in the secquence it was hit, allowing the players to replay the images in their heads off the court. They will be able to study why they won a point and the mistakes to avoid. With Boomer we don’t just work on learning a new shot we learn where and when to use those shots to win points. Most players do not know that there are shot sequences that will win a point 95% of the time, or how to defend against those shots. The things we are putting into boomer will make a players better, Stronger, Faster, Smarter at a younger age ready to compete at the professional level. Yes Analytics can save the tennis industry with the right tools being used by Professionals.

How to use Tennis Analytics in your lessons?

Did you know that 1/2 of all the tennis players in the world have never hit 100 strokes in a row over the net? When I train my players I try to help them understand that they need to work on 100 shots in a row to go pro. I start them with just down bounces on the racquet (dribbling the ball), then I have them bounce the ball up, then down on the side of the racquet, then up on the side of the racquet, then catch the ball with no bounce. As they practice this daily they actually hit the tennis ball 500 times in about 5 mins. that is more hits than a player will hit in an Hour and a half match. But in that 5 mins. they will learn to get in the zone (concentration), feel the ball better (touch), work on timing (the firming of the Racquet by griping). So how would you like to have a report in 10 mins on the status of your students ability to read the ball coming at them?, identify exactly how they handle a Heavy Top Spin Shot? the depth?, width? and speed? of their response. How would you like to the see the placement of each shot in order? How would like to see their tactics or lack thereof in a tie- breaker? Would you like to see how they handle Heavy Topspins from level 2.0 to 7.0? Where do they breakdown? Is it because of fatigue? Strenght? Timing? Sequence? Reading? You know your players are good in Drill mode, how do you get them to execute on game mode? Start with Boomer! In ten mins boomer can hit about 75 strokes and play 1 Tie-Breaker, and give you and your players a performance evaluation at their level. Now you can. The raw data can be overwhelming for the 71 strokes but we at Do It Right Tennis have compiled 4 pages of the information that we feel you should know and your players should study off the court. If they know their workout is being tracked for them they don’t have think about the results they can focus on their strokes while on the court. As they replay the shots in their mind while reviewing the data they will build better pictures of their strokes. Here is just 1 sample of 2 pages. Just think about it these 71 strokes occurred at about 1 stroke every 4 second you had to write what the opponent hit at you and what you did with the shot.

Newest level of Tennis Analytics available in world.

Robert Gibson started working in his back yard in Cary, NC trying to develop the drills that would lend themselves to analyzing tennis players for training purposes. He started his analysis in San Jose, California back in the late 1970’s using a VCR and video cassette camera teaching lessons, which was stolen in 1978 in Hollister, California. Now Robert has added High speed digital cameras and Dartfish.  Boomer’s 5 min Tennis Analysis program is Robert’s 5 min warm-up before a match with an opponent so that Boomer can read the players response to the strokes Robert used to delivered to his opponents. This routine will allow the Boomer’s computer to analysis in greater detail and accuracy the players game in less than 10 mins. what Robert tried to do with the Human eye back in the 1970/80s. The cool thing about this is you actually get to have the information available for the player to take back to their pro to develop a training program to improve the player’s game. Tennis Analytics is being tested on Robert’s students  in Raleigh where he works for the city of Raleigh.  Everyone says they get a better, more dynamic work-outs with Boomer than they ever get with regular city classes. Boomer has been up and down the East coast playing players in Florida to Maine and even California. But this Year 2012 is the first year Boomer is going to re-define  Tennis Analytics and Tennis Training in general. You should see Higher levels, faster hitters, and greater records by younger players as they start using Tennis Analytics by Do It Right Tennis using the Tennis Robotics in Boomer.

Tennis Analytics

Are Tennis Coaches at fault for not providing analytics in their programs? No, Most coaches already do the analytics for their students thus their advice is adjusted to the player’s ability to do as the coach request. To tell you the truth, I believe that the number one reason players do not meet their potential is because of our training methods. Players are not given enough opportunity to analyze their game off the playing field.

Too many of our players go into analytical mode during the hit or during the point. In part because we have had no way to separate the analysis from the stroke building and everyone is always wondering are they doing it right each and every stroke? Good Tennis Lessons, Tennis Instruction, or Tennis Coach is a way that these problems can be overcome. The way I was able to get most of my students out of the analysis mode was to feed the balls faster than they expect so that there is no time to watch their great hit. The other way was to make them hit so many shots in a row that they had to “get into the zone”. Concentrate on what it was they were doing. Hitting the ball at a specific point of contact for a specific result.

Some believe that you have to analyze every shot before you hit. Reality is that you have to read the ball spin, speed, trajectory, and place yourself in the path of the ball to hit it at the point of contact that you need to achieve the desired stroke and placement of your shot. But that isn’t analytics as much as it is shot recognition. Then comes the question what is the good, better and best shot to hit from that point of contact. These have to be the pictures that one brings up in their mind based on the point of contact they perceive they will have when they get there.

I have a ball machine that can tell a player what they are doing with a Heavy Topspin shot, how they handle a drop shot where their shot goes when they hit a passing shot. This machine will also give the player immediate verbal feedback in certain modes which means the player doesn’t have to look at where every shot they hit is going.

These analytics will help a player learn what they can do and what they should do if they receive this type of shot. At the same time it will allow them to have the ability to continually grow in this life-time sport. Just as an eastern grip is better for hitting low balls with topspin, tall players need to serve and volley, that doesn’t mean short people can’t. It is just harder, and it can be learned and done by anyone given the time to create the motor skills to accomplish the task at hand. Just like an eastern grip can hit a slice.

I believe that Analytics if filtered will give a coach more influence over the player’s development. It will give the player more control over their success. Tennis analytics will also allow sponsors to stop looking for the next Federer and move the tennis industry in the direction of building great players. Don’t get me wrong, there are traits that make great people, but I know if people are prepared to do the things they are asked to do, taught to concentrate on the things they are doings and given the conditioning to have timing (being in the right place at the right time with the right stuff) and have developed the ability to visualize themselves doing the thing they are trying to do. They will be far more successful at everything they do. And Tennis Analytics is the next step to the highest level of game. And anyone that is found using them off the court to improve their pictures on the court will be more successful at everything they do.
